Tactical Targets: Nearly Trapped Pieces

Academy | Tactics | Targets | Nearly Trapped Pieces

In chess, a piece that is nearly trapped is also a potential tactical target. Its limited mobility makes it vulnerable, and with the right moves, you may be able to fully trap it.

In this position, we can observe that Black’s bishop on b6 is nearly trapped. Additionally, even though Black’s knight on d5 is defended, it is still vulnerable to a threat from the lower-valued pawn on c2.

White to move. Where are the targets?

1. c4 gaining a tempo while heading to c5. Ne7 2. c5 trapping the bishop.

When you notice a nearly trapped piece, you can treat it as a potential tactical target.
