Tactical Targets: Clusters

Academy | Tactics | Targets | Clusters

Sometimes, two or more potential tactical targets in a position form a cluster, and you may be able to exploit the cluster by rearranging the targets using various tactical motifs. This idea is best explained with an example.

Black’s king, queen, and rook form a cluster of targets.

1. Qh8+ attracts the Black king to h8, then 1… Kxh8 2. Nxf7+ forks the Black king and queen.

When we spot a cluster of targets, we can explore ways to exploit them using tactical motifs.
