A tactical resource is any opportunity—obvious or hidden—that can be exploited to gain an advantage, such as a vulnerable piece, a tactical pattern, or a combination of factors.

White’s rook on e3 is undefended. If our rook on f5 weren’t in the way, we could capture it. This raises the question: can we move our rook from f5 while gaining a tempo? Once we spot this potential resource and ask the right question, the solution becomes clear:
