Blunder Awareness Example #4

Academy | Calculation | Blunder Awareness | Example #4

Black intends to play 1… Nxe5. Why would this be a blunder?

Solution: 1… Nxe5? (Ne7-f5 would’ve been better) 2. Qxf8+ Rxf8 3. Rxf8#

Observation

In this complex position, Black may have noticed White’s threat, Qf7#, and assumed that Nxe5 would defend the f7 square. However, they overlooked that White was also threatening Qxf8+. The lesson: spotting one threat doesn’t mean you’ve seen them all!
