Blunder Awareness Example #1

Academy | Calculation | Blunder Awareness | Example #1

A blunder is a move you instantly recognize as a serious mistake, usually because you overlooked something that, in hindsight, seems glaringly obvious.

Blunder Awareness Example #1
Black intends to play 1… Nxe4. Why would this be a blunder?

Solution: 1… Nxe4? 2. Qd5+, followed by 3. Qxe4.

Observation

Black seems to have overlooked that, by moving their knight from f6, they left the d5 square undefended, allowing Qd5+. An important part of developing your calculation skills is to consider not only what your move achieves, but also its potential downsides—such as leaving a square undefended or exposing a piece to attack.
