Roadmap > Tactics > Targets > Threats
A simple threat against a target is often the starting point of a tactical opportunity.
The target could be an undefended piece, or just an idea your opponent must stop — such as threatening checkmate.
Example of Threats
White to move:

1. Qe5 is in essence a double attack because it creates two threats: 1) Qxb8 as well as 2) Qh8#. Black must stop the checkmate (1… f6) but then loses the rook on b8.
Sometimes even simple threats can lead to tactical opportunities. As the pressure builds, your opponent may no longer be able to meet every threat. That is when the tactical idea comes to life. Make it a habit to be on the lookout for potential threats, for both you and your opponent, of course.
