An “in-between move” interrupts the expected sequence of moves, often creating unexpected tactical opportunities or preventing your opponent’s ideas from working.
Here are three examples of In-Between Moves.
Example #1

1. Bc4+ Using an in-between move (check, gaining a tempo) to move the bishop out of danger before capturing the knight on e4.
Example #2

1… Bf7+ 2. b3 e4
1… e4? Bc4+ The white bishop escapes.

1. Ng4! Qxg3 2. Nxf6+
