Forks / Double Attacks

This page is an extension of 56 Tactical Patterns That All Chess Players Should Know.

A double attack occurs when a single move creates two threats at the same time. Since the opponent can usually respond to only one threat, double attacks are one of the most common ways to win material.

Here are three examples of Forks / Double Attacks.

Example #1

1… Nf4+

Example #2

1. Ng5 threatening both Qxh7# and Nf7+.

Example #3

1. Qxg6 Kxg6 2. Ne5+ Notice how 2. Ne5+ also prevents 2… Kf7.
