I was considering the move 1. c4 to improve white’s pawn chain. I never thought about the 1. a5 option, it missed my eye completely. But as you say, the a5 option secures the c5 square as a nice post for white’s knight.

Yeah, also two downsides of playing 1.c4 is that 1) black can now play 1… a5 and stop white’s idea to secure c5-square and 2) the d4-pawn can potentially become weak.
