A useful endgame tactic you should know

You are here: HomeTactics > Useful Endgame Tactic

The idea featured in the position below is fairly common in rook endgames. BUT even though it’s fairly simple – you might miss it if you don’t know it well (particularly if you are low on time).

Black just played 1… Kc7 to prevent 2.Rc8+ followed by h8=Q.

  1. Could black have played a better move than Kc7?
  2. Can white force a win here?

SOLUTION

1.Ra8
2.Ra8

The point is 2.Ra8 Rxh7 3.Ra7+ followed by 4.Rxh7.

Note that instead of 1… Kc7? black should have played 1… Kb7! Then white’s idea wouldn’t work and the game would be a draw.
